Despite the absence of the first minute book from 1906-1911, they cover the years from its formation to its merger with the Maritime Employers' Association to form the Shipping Federation in 1984, and include minutes, partial membership lists, some financial records, correspondence with members, other organisations, fellow employer bodies and regulatory authorities, such as the Ministry of Transport, papers dealing with such matters as courts of inquiry on shipwrecks and damage to ships, shipping in general, port facilities and development, coastal shipping and competition, newspaper cuttings and circulars.A major part of the collection relates to the Federation's task in negotiating with its members' labour force. The Seamen's Union is well represented in the records, those of the Cooks and Stewards Union and Merchant Service Guild less so, while there is an almost complete absence of Marine Engineers records. Negotiations with waterside workers were mainly conducted by the Port Employers Association among other bodies. However, during the 1913 strike, the Federation did play a role in organising opposition to the waterfront unions as can be seen from the Wellington Strike Committee minute book.There are also records of the Trans-Tasman Passenger and Freight Conference, concerned with the co-ordination of shipping charges and the short-lived Wellington Branch of the Federation, which was subsumed into the national body on its move to Wellington. Arrangement: The Federation had sorted their records originally into four groups: 'domestic', comprising minutes, financial records, correspondence and subject files; Wellington Branch records; Trans-Tasman Conference papers; and the 'industrial' dealing with union matters. This arrangement is reflected in the series with 1 to 8 being 'domestic', 9 the Wellington Branch, 10-1 the Trans-tasman papers and 11-17 the 'industrial' records. The Federation was formed in 1906, inheriting from its predecessor, the Auckland Steamship Owners Association, the smaller shipping companies and 'one scow owners' and its Auckland headquarters. In 1917 (the Union Steam Ship Company and the 'Home boats' of the British Conference lines not becoming members until 1911), the Federation was based in Auckland until 1917 when it moved its head offices to Wellington. In 1984, the Federation merged with the Maritime Employers Association (formed 1975) to become the New Zealand Shipowners' and Maritime Employers Association Inc, usually known as the New Zealand Shipping Federation.
