- W295251466 abstract "THE BYRONIC IMAGE: THE POET PORTRAYED. By Robert Beevers. Abingdon: Olivia Press, 2005. Pp. 163. ISBN 0-9542118-1-2. £15.00. And bards burn what they call their 'midnight taper', To have when the original is dust, A name, a wretched picture, and worse bust. (Don Juan) Thus the author of this brilliant book prefaces it with a timely epigraph, and reveals his own preference from the many portraits reproduced therein by selecting the most intensely-realised and least-well-known image of the poet for the cover: Henry Meyer's engraving after the fine drawing by the poet's near-contemporary George Harlow, in which appears a haughty Byron, eyes cast-down, nose finely-chiselled in quivering profile, shirt-collar and curls in Bohemian disarray - the 'subversive' image. The author analyses each of the portraits, Byron's relationship with the artists and the circumstances involved. Each work is like a station on Byron's brief action-packed journey through life. 'I leave England without regret', he wrote, before his first sojourn abroad, 'and I shall return to it without pleasure.' That was before his real troubles over Newstead began, dealing with the incompetent, procrastinating Dickensian lawyer, the estate chaotic and for years half-sold. Doris Langley-Moore believed that Byron suffered from 'a sort of spiritual claustrophobia'. This is a book that teaches us far more than the mere depiction of a series of images: the reader learns of the detailed processes involved in their reproduction, for the development of engraving had begun and consequently multiplicities of prints, cheap and otherwise marketed, carried the 'magical potency' of the poet to the huge fame he attained before the fifty empty carriages that followed his funeral cortege testified to the condemnation he suffered for his liberal principles. Even John Murray warned and pleaded with him to 'drop' the Leigh Hunts. Perhaps the most revealing portrait in this valuable volume, an unique addition to Byron scholarship, is the portrait of the Hon. Augusta Leigh. The one most often reproduced has never been a satisfactory image. In this miniature by James Holmes, dated 1828, we at last gain a glimpse of her sad-eyed gentle loveliness, while to add to the treasures there are exquisite vignettes from Smith & Elder's The Byron Gallery. As for the busts, they too have their fascinating tales to tell: of Bartolini the ardent Napoleonist who accompanied the Emperor to Elba; of the statue by Thorwalsden rejected at the suggestion of a Trinity College graduate, Christopher de la Pryme, but given sanctuary in its destined destination - the library - radiating light, wisdom and a poetic rhythm of movement. …" @default.
