- W2952996089 abstract "Pressure-volume (P-V) measurement and radiation-induced polymerization of styrene were studied up to 6000 kg/cm/sup 2/ at 40/sup 0/C. The specific volume changed abruptly at 2000 kg/cm/sup 2/ in the P-V isotherm of the monomer. A Van't Hoff plot of the overall polymerization rate showed a break corresponding to the abrupt change in the P-V isotherm. The overal activation volume (..delta..V/sup + +/) was -15.8 cm/sup 3//mol up to 2000 kg/cm/sup 2/ and was -50.5 cm/sup 3//mol in the pressure range of 2000 to 2800 kg/cm/sup 2/. In the pressure range of 2800 to 4000 kg/cm/sup 2/ the polymerization rate hardly depended on the pressure (..delta..V/sup + +/ = -4.3 cm/sup 3//mol). Above 4000 kg/cm/sup 2/ the activation volume decreased to -29.5 cm/sup 3//mol. Above the crystallization pressure of styrene, polymerization did not proceed in the time scale in this work. A P-V isotherm for a 63.3 mol % styrene-benzene binary system was smooth and the pressure dependence of the rate was described with a single activation volume of -17.6 cm/sup 3//mol over the entire experimental pressure range. From comparison between the phenomena in both systems, it is proposed that styrene molecules align at suitable conditions even in a liquid state." @default.
