- W2953310903 abstract "Recently, I have tried to explore further the resonances of the idea of the house as a living thing, which is more than just a metaphor for many Southeast Asian peoples. This has led me to a more detailed concern, firstly, with the indigenous concepts of 'vitality' referred to by the Malay term semangat and its cognates in related languages, and secondly, withAdelaar (1985: 60) gives Proto-Malayic * sumar]Jt, 'spirit (of a living being), soul, inspiration'; he lists Standard Malay SJ11w1]at, Minangkabau suma1]e', Banjarese Malay (Hulu isolect) suma1] at, 'spirit, inspiration', Middle Malay (Seraway isolect) sJma1]ay (-y unexpl.), Iban sJmJ1]at(penultimate J unexplained; Mualang-Dayak has sama1] at) , 'spirit, soul', Jakartanese suma1]et (a Sundanese loan?), sama1]at (a Standard Malay loan?), 'inspiration'. He compares these to a reconstruction of PMP * suma1]et. 5Robert Blust writes:The Malay word semangat reflects PMP *suma1]ed, which evidently referred to the soul of a living being, as opposed to PAN *qaniCu, PMP *qanitu 'ghost, spirit of the dead'. At least two other words that refer to the life force or soul of the living are widely distributed in AN languages, and the precise semantic relationships of the three terms remain to be worked out. However, one point of interest regarding * suma1]ed should be noted: in addition to the simple term it is necessary to reconstruct PMP * sumar;ed ni pajay, 'spirit/soul of the rice' - a concept which must have a history of at least five millennia in the AN language family.6" @default.
