- W2953633523 abstract "Pharmaceutical drugs used in human/veterinary medicine are natural/synthetic chemicals with targeted mode of action. The active components of these drugs are not completely absorbed or excreted from the body. Far from disappearing, these compounds accumulate and pollute water as well as soil causing environmental toxicity. Different classes of drugs that are considered as pollutants include anticancer agents, analgesics, antibiotics, β-blockers, contraceptives, and hormones. It has also been reported that released antibiotics in the atmosphere contribute to the increasing cases of antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Thus it is an utmost necessity to develop bio-analytical devices that are inexpensive, efficient, user friendly and can provide quick, accurate analysis of these pharmaceutical contaminants in the environment. Among several biosensors (amperometric, impedimetric, immunosensors, optical) available, immunosensors with novel nano-biotechnological approach have incredible potentials. The primary aim behind this chapter is to provide an overview on the available protein/enzyme-based biosensors for detection of different pharmaceutical pollutants in the atmosphere." @default.
