- W2953663145 abstract "Abstract Behavioral factors such as increased energy intake as well as decreased physical activity have been linked to the sharp rise in overweight and obesity, which bring together related diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary and cerebrovascular diseases, various cancers, liver disease, and asthma. In addition to increasing physical activity, strategies that improve nutrition are fundamental to control the epidemic of related diseases at both individual and population levels. Accumulating evidence indicates that a balanced, low-energy diet is one of the key factors. Dietary fibers play a crucial role in reducing the energy intake by not only decreasing the energy content of foods but also improving satiety through several mechanisms, such as slower absorption of nutrients, prolonged gastric emptying, signaling the production of satiety hormones, gastric distention, and the need for increased mastication. Epidemiological studies as well as controlled human trials have shown that a higher intake of dietary fiber results in reduced energy intake and increased satiety, which leads to lower body weight and smaller waist circumference. The potential role of dietary fiber in preventing diseases such as diabetes and obesity has been proven by many scientific studies and mentioned by health authorities all over the world. The dietary fiber content of food products has been a potential basis for nutritional composition claims in many parts of the world. The aim of this chapter is to review the current evidence from human trials and epidemiological studies on the impact of fiber-rich foods and isolated dietary fiber on body-weight management and nutritional issues." @default.
