- W2953950547 abstract "The study of linguistic behavior of human infants addresses one of the central questions of human biology and evolution–to what extent does human linguistic ability follow from innate, species-specific biological mechanisms. The aspects of human speech have not received much attention in recent studies of the development of human speech in relation to human language. The intonation, stress and general melody of speech constitute the suprasegmental component of speech. The breath-group is the primary element that people use to segment the flow of speech into sentence-like units. The breath-group is organized about vegetative constraints of respiration and the physiology of the lungs and larynx. The control of subglottal air pressure and laryngeal muscle control in children who have been deaf from birth is usually extremely poor. Traditional, perceptually based accounts of the acquisition of speech state that infants start to imitate the sounds that they hear towards 8 to 10 months." @default.
