- W2954043059 abstract "During these times of globalisation, international retirement migration is animportant factor in the development and economic agenda of many countriesin the global south, for it combines investments in tourism and real estatecapital (Janoschka 2009; Jackiewicz and Crane 2010). Typically, this kind ofinternational migration has been seen as an instrument of ‘development’because of its beneficial effects on local labour markets (Truly 2002; Sunil et al.2007; see also MPI 2006 for the Mexican case). However, as Croucher (2012:5) notes, ‘the debate over whether immigration leads to job loss versus jobcreation is a complicated and unsettled one’. For those who have studied thephenomenon from the place where retirement migrants settle (Lizarraga 2008;Janoschka 2009, 2012; Jackiewicz and Crane 2010; Blazquez et al. 2011), thisuncertainty extends to its economic, political and cultural implications. To enrich this debate, using the case of the Chapala Lakeshore and speci-fically, the indigenous community of Mezcala, we will see how the process andeffects of residential tourism can be understood through the idea of ‘accumulation by dispossession’, a phrase coined by Harvey (2004) to describe howcapital acts in globalisation. This case will also help us understand howresistance to these activities is a fundamental factor in recreating indigenousidentity in Latin America today. My interest in the topic of internationalretirement migration stems from my work with the community of Mezcala intheir efforts to maintain the integrity of their territory during the past fouryears. By studying the historical and regional framework of this phenomenon, the process experienced in the Chapala Lakeshore can be understood in termsof ‘dispossession’, an idea advanced by Francisco Talavera, a local researcher, three decades ago. In this way, my focus is not to study retirement migrationor residential tourism, but rather to understand the processes of reinforcingidentity in the context of globalisation. I hope that I can contribute to thedebates in this book with such an approach.1" @default.
