- W2954481646 abstract "Abstract The papaya plant ( Carica papaya L . ) is a member of the small family of plants, Caricaceae. As one of the fastest growing trees in the tropics and sub-tropical regions, the fresh fruits of papaya and related products such as juices have significant dietary values to humans. This chapter assesses the therapeutic potential of papaya products for diabetes and associated diseases. Starting from the botanical/taxonomic perspectives, the chemistry and pharmacology of not only the fruits but also leaves, fermented papaya preparations (FFP) and latex/enzymes primarily extracted from unripe fruits are scrutinised. Chemical components identified as antihyperglycaemic and antihyperlipidaemic agents along with mechanisms of action in the various cellular, animals and human/clinical models are also outlined. Beyond direct antidiabetic effect, the growing trend of FFP in dietary supplement application and mechanism of papaya as wound healing and antihypertensive agent are further discussed." @default.
