- W2955021259 abstract "Abstract The history of the brain sciences is replete with “breakthroughs” later found to be unsupported by the evidence, advanced prematurely without unbiased results, based on inadequate sampling, and/or promoted by ulterior motives. Growing attention is being directed at reproducibility in science, with calls for more rigor in the assessment of methods, transparency in reporting results, and establishing best practices. Some famous erroneous theories, along with current unsupported practices, are pointed out. A call for the Popperian principle of falsifiability, not advancing a hypothesis until it has been adequately tested and has survived the gauntlet of skepticism from the experimenter, is made. In addition, we consider the transition from the tyranny of behaviorism and the lack of free will to an approach based on the intrinsic activity of the brain and its interaction with the environment to create thought and action as emergent properties. Armed with such a powerful and hopeful avenue anchored in free will and enormous potential, we look forward to the application of the best principles that science has to offer society. One of these is the acceptance and respect for those with mental disorders in our courts." @default.
