- W2955763873 abstract "Abstract Thermoregulation allows animals to control their internal body temperature in environments that are outside their thermoneutral range. Thermoregulation may involve thermogenesis (i.e., heat production to keep body temperature at normal levels in cold environments) or thermolysis (i.e., loss of body heat to the environment when temperatures are high). Optimal nutrition involves balancing of feed ingredients and nutrients to meet the requirements of the animal for basic maintenance of physiological function, for growth, and for reproduction/lactation. For sows housed in ambient temperature housing such as hoop structures, allowed feed intake must reflect not only the temperature changes but also the body condition of the animals. Body condition refers to the general degree of fat present in the animal's body at a given time. Body condition reflects the suitability of the animal to meet the physiological demands of the production stage she is in. Swine managed in hoop structures typically experience a high level of well-being. In particular, hoop systems provide animals with greater freedom for expressing natural behaviors than conventional management systems." @default.
