- W2955887958 abstract "The objective of the study was to estimate the prevalence of self-monitoring blood glucose and assess its impact on healthcare utilization and costs between blood glucose test strip users and non- users among the US adults with diabetes. Data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, 2014-2015 were used to estimate the prevalence of blood glucose test strip use and compare the utilization and costs associated with medication use, ED and hospital visits between test strip users and non-users. The unadjusted mean expenditure and number of visits were estimated separately for each category of diabetic medication use between test strip users and non-users using linear regression. A logistic regression model was used to assess the relationship between use of test strips and healthcare utilization. There were a total of 5407 adults with diabetes in the dataset. Among the test strip users, 43% used insulin, 29% used sulfonylurea, and 37% used neither insulin nor sulfonylurea. Larger percentage of people with private insurance (62%) used test strips than those with public insurance (34%). In general, test strip users had higher diabetes-related total costs, combining expenses for hospital admissions, ED visits, outpatient visits, office-based visits, and prescription costs. When calculated separately, costs for hospital admissions, ED visits, and prescriptions were also higher for test strip users. However, the logistic regression models for hospital admission (OR=0.94;95% CI= 0.42- 2.12) or ED visits (OR=0.46;95% CI=0.24-0.87) did not find significant differences between test strip users and non-users after adjusting for demographic factors and comorbidities. Our study showed many patients who were not using insulin or sulfonylurea performed SMBG. However, the use of test strip among diabetic patients is not associated with lower likelihood of hospital or ED utilization. Future studies should assess the health outcomes directly linked to routine SMBG and determine the cost-effectiveness of its use." @default.
