In China, sponge-style old community renewal (SOCR) has been formed as a new approach and is undergoing an upsurge. For evaluating the outcome of the SOCR and promoting residents' engagement in sponge city construction, it is essential to explore the satisfaction of community residents with the SOCR projects. Hence, the aim of this study is to assess residents' satisfaction (i.e., residents' perception of meeting their needs, expectations and aspirations) with the SOCR and examine its influencing factors. Guided by previous studies, a comprehensive conceptual framework to test the determinants of residents' satisfaction with the SOCR projects was developed and seven hypotheses were proposed. As one of the first batches of national pilot sponge cities, Zhenjiang was selected as the study area. Linear regression was applied to investigate the roles of different factors in predicting residents' satisfaction with the SOCR projects. One critical finding is that residents with high satisfaction were the people who were young, with a high education level, a high income, a strong sense of community belonging, a high level of support for the SOCR policy and great awareness of the importance of the SOCR. Several policy implications are provided to enhance the satisfaction of residents in old communities, such as paying attention to residents’ dissatisfaction with the SOCR, promoting an education program, and encouraging residents to engage in the SOCR projects." @default.
