- W295618975 abstract "SummaryIt is clear that experiments in which Bursaphelenchus spp. are inoculated into young plants have no obvious scientific merit and they provide no relevant information about pathogenicity. Furthermore, the finding of a particular nematode species in a dead tree does not prove that the nematode was responsible for the death of the tree. Therefore, it must be concluded that the publications on the pathogenicity of Bursaphelenchus spp., other than B. xylophilus, do not present adequate evidence to support the view that these species could adversely affect trees of pine under natural conditions. Bursaphelenchus mucronatus, B. sexdentati, B. leoni, B. hellenicus or B. hofmanni cannot be considered to be pathogenic to Pinus spp. unless further convincing evidence is produced. Bursaphelenchus xylophilus remains the only species of the genus that is pathogenic to trees, and only to a limited number of Pinus spp. There is a need to develop methodologies to demonstrate and prove pathogenicity by Bursaphelenchus spp." @default.
