But sometimes patients do not receive any benefits from this treatment because of rapid worsening of their general condition. This prospective monocentric study assessed the effective delivery of palliative radiotherapy. From 1st December 2015 to 29th February 2016, all consecutive patients receiving palliative radiotherapy in our hospital were included. The primary endpoint was the effective delivery of palliative radiotherapy according to the initial prescription (total dose, overall treatment time and fractionation). The secondary endpoints were the number of treatment breaks, the clinical benefit, the number of deaths and the delays for admission in the palliative care unit. Fifty-nine patients were included and 64 treatments were analysed. The treatment sites were: bone (70.3%) and brain (21.9%). The treatment goals were: pain control only (43.8%), decompression only (21.9%), pain control and decompression (32.8%), haemostatic aim (1.6%). Palliative treatment was achieved in 57 cases (89%). Temporary interruption of the radiotherapy treatment was necessary in six cases (9.4%; three for medical reason, three for logistic reason). The main reason of permanent interruption was worsening of performance status (seven cases). Palliation of symptoms (complete or partial responses) was obtained in 44 cases (68.8%). Seven patients (11.9%) died during the month after the end of the treatment. No delay or cancellation for admission in the palliative care unit were observed. Palliative radiotherapy was completed as originally planned in 51 cases (79.9%) with a clinical benefit for 44 cases (68.8%). Radiation therapy must not be neglected as a palliative treatment at the end-of-life. Le rôle principal de la radiothérapie palliative est de réduire l’inconfort des patients, mais parfois, les patients ne tirent aucun bénéfice de ce traitement en raison d’une altération rapide de leur état général. Cette étude prospective monocentrique a évalué la réalisation effective de la radiothérapie palliative. Du 1er décembre 2015 au 29 février 2016, tous les patients consécutifs traités par irradiation palliative dans notre hôpital ont été inclus. Le critère principal d’évaluation était la réalisation effective de la radiothérapie palliative conformément à la prescription initiale (dose totale, étalement, fractionnement). Les critères secondaires étaient le nombre d’arrêts de traitement, le bénéfice clinique, le nombre de décès et le retard de prise en charge en unité de soins palliatifs. Cinquante-neuf patients ont été inclus et 64 traitements ont été analysés. Les localisations traitées étaient l’os (70,3 %) et l’encéphale (21,9 %). L’objectif du traitement était antalgique seul (43,8 %), décompressif seul (21,9 %), antalgique et décompressif (32,8 %), hémostatique (1, 6 %). La radiothérapie a été menée à terme dans 89 % des cas (n = 57). Un arrêt transitoire a été nécessaire pour six traitements (9,4 % ; trois pour raison médicale et trois pour motif logistique). La raison principale d’arrêt définitif de traitement était l’aggravation de l’état général (sept cas). Une réponse clinique (complète ou partielle) a été obtenue dans 44 cas (68,8 %). Sept patients (11,9 %) sont décédés dans le mois suivant la radiothérapie. Pour aucun patient l’admission en unité des soins palliatifs a dû être retardée ou annulée. La radiothérapie palliative a été réalisée conformément à la prescription initiale dans 51 cas (79,9 %) avec un bénéfice clinique dans 44 cas (68,8 %).
