- W2956503844 abstract "The genesis for this book was our realisation that most of the research to date on the role of rituals and traditional events in contemporary society has not been carried out from an events studies perspective. We decided that it was important that this book be multi-disciplinary in scope, showcasing the work of a wide variety of researchers from around the globe, and that it set future research directions, to advance the field. Nevertheless, we are conscious that this is only a first step and there are numerous areas that warrant further research. This final chapter draws together some of the key themes developed in this book, sets out a research agenda and considers the future outlook for rituals in an events context. The revival and rebranding of traditional events to suit modern sensibilities or needs is often done with an eye to the tourism benefits of these spectacles. This phenomenon is exemplified by one of the most iconic events of the twenty-first century, the Running of the Bulls festival in Pamplona. When Ernest Hemingway wrote about it in his book Fiesta (also known as The Sun Also Rises) in 1927, the Festival of San Fermin (to use its proper name) was not a household name, and was largely patronised by locals." @default.
