- W2957560982 abstract "Setting: Christmas Eve, 1914, in the Scottish, French, and German bunkers. Characters: Scottish Father Palmer, German Lieutenant Horstmayer, German soldier Nikolaus Sprink, French cook Ponchel, Scottish Lieutenant Gordon, French Lieutenant Audebert, other soldiers. The opera is sung in the natural languages of the characters (English, French, and German); translations by the author and Minnesota Opera Focus are given here. Notes are from the libretto as written, except where necessary for reader clarity. [In the Scottish bunker. A soldier enters, tooting a bagpipe.] FATHER PALMER: Where did you find that?! SCOTTISH SOLDIER: The lads from the sixty-seventh passed it on. Donated it when they found out where we’d be for Christmas. PALMER: How ’bout a tune then? [The soldier starts to play a ballad that the soldiers instantly recognize.] PALMER [singing]: Many the miles I have travel’d, many the seas I have cross’d. . . . [The soldiers have stopped eating and drinking and listen. Some are enchanted, some are sad, some are cautious. At the end of the ballad, there is a slight pause to permit some melancholy—and then it is forgotten with a rousing cheer.] PONCHEL: Must we listen to THAT all night? I would rather hear bombs. HORSTMAYER: Is this a diversion? Remain vigilant. NIKOLAUS: Someone’s having a party and we’re not invited? Now, who would like some REAL singing? [They cheer. NIKOLAUS sings a German Christmas carol, accompanied by a soldier on harmonica.] PONCHEL: Oh, not THEM too! I don’t know which is worse: the sound of the dying cat over in Roast Beef land, or the KGH-GH-GH of that detestable language. [NIKOLAUS climbs up into no-man’s-land and begins to sing with the bagpipes. Soldiers peer over the bunker.] PONCHEL: Oh, my God! What’s he doing? [The German soldiers position Christmas trees atop their bunker, as NIKOLAUS finishes the song. There is a cheer from the Germans, echoed by the Scots, then followed by the French. Silence. Tension. The bagpiper starts playing a Latin Christmas song. NIKOLAUS sings along and, even more emboldened, picks up a Christmas tree and steps forward.] SCOTTISH SOLDIERS: Will you look at that? It’s a trick. HORSTMAYER: Sprink! That is enough! [As NIKOLAUS sings, the bagpiper moves to the top of the bunker. Slowly and cautiously, another Scottish soldier does the same. Then two Frenchmen rise. PALMER takes a candle and holds it up. Other soldiers do the same. NIKOLAUS ends the song and hoists a Christmas tree in the air as a gesture of peace. The gesture is echoed by the Scottish soldiers raising their candles. There is cheering and applause from all sides.] NIKOLAUS: Good evening to the English! PALMER: Good evening to the German! But we are not English, sir, we are Scottish! SCOTTISH SOLDIER: And we would rather die than sing in German! NIKOLAUS: No, it would probably kill me first if you sang in German! [The men laugh. HORSTMAYER looks behind him and sees that his soldiers are at the top of the bunker. He has no choice; he withdraws a white flag and waves it and rushes to grab NIKOLAUS. GORDON and AUDEBERT approach the two men, with white flags in each of their hands.] GORDON: Gentlemen. I think you believe as I do that this war will not be settled tonight. We are all clearly exhausted, and I propose a cease-fire. For tonight only, on Christmas Eve. Agreed? HORSTMAYER [warily]: Agreed, but only for tonight. ALL [shaking hands]: Merry Christmas—Joyeux Noël—Fröhliche Weihnachten. [The soldiers slowly move from the top of the bunkers toward each other, not smiling. When all forces meet in no-man’s-land, there is a long, tense pause—this could go either way.] [Suddenly, PONCHEL reaches into his pocket, scaring the nervous Germans in front of him.] PONCHEL [presenting a chocolate bar and unwrapping it]: Chocolate? GERMAN SOLDIER: You first. PONCHEL [comprehending what the soldier means]: Very good. [He takes a bite. Then offers it.] GERMAN SOLDIER [taking the chocolate bar and biting into it]: Very good. [The men start to mix, tentatively at first, then growing in celebration.] VARIOUS SOLDIERS: This is my girlfriend.—She is very beautiful.—Here is my fiancée.—My wife.—My two children.—Have some whiskey.—Champagne?—You are from Metz? My wife has a sister there.—How do you say?—Merry Christmas.—A cigarette?—Where are you from?—Freiburg.—I am Heinrich.—I’m Thomas.—Didier.—My pleasure." @default.
