- W2957736900 abstract "“Fire” largely remains a misinterpreted term as state of art design construct due to its diverse nature in terms of scale, severity, and implications. Still a simple and unique design fire construct eludes the mankind. Unfortunately, past experience and all major accidents have shown that man made passive fire defense against real fire are found to be generally inadequate. The treatment of fire as energy phenomenon against the thermodynamically un-conserved “temperature” holds the key for understanding of real fire severity. Fire severity depends upon the type, location, and distribution of combustible and confinement of enclosure. Few basic CFD studies are summarized to understand the characteristic of fire and its severity. The numerical modeling on fire severity related aspects are essential to come up to a reasonable energy based localized “design fire” in place of conventional time temperature curves. The present chapter focuses on CFD modeling based basic cell construct of fire as flame with energy representation. The next candidate is the transfer mechanism of energy by plume and its interaction with the confinement of enclosure. The success of CFD modeling is demonstrated by various validation studies in terms of temperature, buoyant plume rise time and puffing frequencies. The role of CFD modeling in FHA (Fire Hazard Analysis) has been demonstrated by example in fire influence methodology, development of design fire for fire confinement based FHA and by development of some of the fire severity related factors which are used in NPPs FHA." @default.
