- W2958041828 abstract "Abstract In order for chemical neurotransmission to occur, transmitter molecules must escape from the presynaptic axon and diffuse to their site of action, and this must happen rapidly in order for the nervous system to function in the way it does. Based on clues from investigations of both evoked and spontaneous neurotransmission, largely at the neuromuscular junction, scientists discovered that neurotransmitter molecules are released from neurons via synaptic vesicles. They determined that these vesicles each contain approximately the same amount of neurotransmitter, termed a “quantum,” and that the probability of vesicle release can be altered by a number of factors, including the concentration of intracellular calcium. The behavior of these vesicles during presynaptic action potential activity can be described by the quantal theory of transmitter release, a conceptual and computational framework that predicts normal neurotransmitter release from synapses and has also allowed researchers to study how synapses change in response to things such as drugs and disease." @default.
