- W2959572615 abstract "The term and notion of aspectuality were introduced relatively late to Spanish and Romance linguistics. Aspectuality is a universal category which comprises all possible means - morphologic, syntactic, lexical or contextual - to express the development of an action and to mark the internal temporal limits of it. In aspectual languages such as Slavic and Greek, aspect is morphologically marked. The notion of aspect seems to have a contradictory history in Spanish grammaticography, which has been reflected in the names assigned to the Spanish verb tenses since the 17th century. The names of the Spanish verb tenses underwent a process of numerous changes in the history of the Spanish grammars. Up to the 18th century it was especially the accuracy of the Latin tradition which led to difficulties in the designation of the verb tenses because of the contradiction between the names and the use of the Latin and Spanish verb tenses. The delay in introducing compound verb tenses into the regular grammatical description is one of the results. On the other hand, there is a frequent tendency to mix up grammatical and lexical aspect in Spanish grammars. This, in turn, has led to the non-distinction between aspect and Aktionsarten as a grammatical phenomenon. For that reason, there is a tendency to speak more about lexical (Aktionsarten) than about grammatical aspect in some posterior Spanish grammars." @default.
