- W2962115712 abstract "Multifunctionality of the artificial cilium using ac electro-osmosis (ACEO) is attractive for various microfluidic applications. However, high-speed periodic beating motion of the ACEO cilium has not yet been experimentally proved, mainly because of the intrinsic slow returning speed of the beam. In addition, a simple-plate-beam ACEO cilium that uses a gold leaf is too fragile to realize a stable device. To overcome this problem, we here propose an ACEO elastic actuator using a spiral-gold-thread beam having a two-electrode structure that accelerates not only a going motion but also a returning motion. Through this improvement, we have successfully observed the high-speed periodic motion of the gold thread with a beating frequency of more than 10 Hz, which is comparable to that of a cilium in nature. Furthermore, we propose a simple model that explains the displacement of the spiral-gold-thread beam mainly owing to the side-ACEO-flow effects. We believe that our experimental results will open a new approach to developing the multifunction device in microfluidics." @default.
