- W2962804692 abstract "Request for Clarification: We commend the authors Muniz-Pumares et al. (11) for their recent brief review. Respectfully, we take exception to their conclusion that practitioners should proceed with “a degree of caution” when using the 3-minute all-out exercise test (3MT). The authors noted that the 3MT may be flawed because of the consistent reporting of a high coefficient of variation for the finite work capacity exceeding critical power (CP), a metric noted as work prime (W′). Such criticism is consistent with the “Gold Standard” of establishing fatigue times with different power outputs, with a test–retest R2 for W′ of 0.62 (7). Moreover, heterogeneous responses in the W′ parameter have been observed following various interventions (see Table 8.2 in Ref. 4). Conversely, CP assessed by either model is consistent for detecting training-induced improvements (20), more than likely due to the proportional energetic contribution of CP to total work (12). Muniz-Pumares et al. (11) recommended observing attainment of maximum oxygen uptake (Vo2max) as a criterion for estimating CP parameters using the 3MT. Such a criterion is questionable, especially if investigators neglect to use a verification protocol (15). The original article on the cycling 3MT (20) observed a lower Vo2 during the 3MT compared with their ramp test; yet, CP and W′ estimates from the 3MT were acceptable. In our view, requiring gas collection and observing “true” Vo2max is not an essential criterion for the 3MT. A convenient aspect of the 3MT is the ability to test a large group of athletes in a single visit (13). The validity of the 3MT can be confirmed by its ability to delineate between steady-state and non–steady-state exercise (19), and the practical application of the 3MT further demonstrates such value. The 3MT has been an effective test to prescribe high-intensity exercise (2,3,20) and has been used with advanced modeling procedures (10), in nearly all modes of exercise (1,3,6,13,14,18,20), including load carriage (5,17). The 3MT has also been applied to shuttle running (8–10,16), offering a new realm for training athletes in a sport-specific manner. A “Gold Standard” is characterized as the best available test without restrictions, and although the original and 3MT methods for the CP concept are subjected to restrictions, we feel the 3MT is the best available test for practitioners. Accepting the traditional model as the “Gold Standard” may be simply appealing to tradition." @default.
