- W2966583311 abstract "Stanislavsky was the first and foremost practice-based researcher on the nature andaesthetics of acting. To treat Stanislavsky as merely a practitioner is to deny thebranches that his work has had in many fields. Conversely, to treat him only asa theoretician is to deny the source from which he created his System, which ispractice-based research transformed into art. The Routledge Companion to Stanislavskystrives to balance his practice and theory in its various manifestations over the lastcentury. Artists and scholars alike have heatedly debated nearly every aspect ofStanislavsky’s legacy and passionately advanced numerous conflicting interpretations of his ideas. With that in mind, this collection of essays and personal narrativespresents a dispassionate look at the historical reception of Stanislavsky’s theoryand practice. In addition, this volume presents his reception in the post-modernworld of theatre, especially in regard to recent information on Active Analysis andnew studies on acting via cognitive science. The chapters that follow detail the changing ways that actors, directors, andscholars have received and applied their own understanding of theatrical art toStanislavsky’s pioneering ideas on both acting and directing. As a consequenceof his innovative and ever-changing approach to his art along with his enduringinfluence, numerous practitioners and scholars have made an icon of Stanislavskyas they understood him, and in the process have obscured the actual person ofStanislavsky. In part, this volume seeks to reveal the authentic Stanislavsky ratherthan the star persona, whether that persona be the father of the Method, animage fashioned by enthusiastic Americans, or the “scientist-artist,” an imagemanufactured in the USSR by the Marxist materialism and Socialist Realism ofStalin’s regime." @default.
