- W2967548003 abstract "Abstract For more than 100 years Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies) have been a useful tool for understanding genetics. Flies and humans are remarkably similar, with flies having homologs to approximately 75% of human disease-causing genes. Given the pace with which new disease-associated variants are being identified in humans, the study of flies may be an excellent means to investigate the pathogenicity of these variants and the underlying biology of disease-associated genes. In this chapter, we will describe the primary tools that Drosophila biologists use to manipulate gene expression, and explain how to apply them to the study of human genetic disease. We will also present examples demonstrating the successful application of these tools to several human genetic diseases." @default.
