Metallic NPs are used in biomedical applications such as bioimaging, drug delivery, and biosensors; therapeutic applications such as treatment of inflammatory diseases, such as inflammatory bowel diseases, inflammatory lung diseases, ophthalmic inflammatory diseases, and rheumatoid arthritis and construction of biomembranes, hydrogels, etc.; and environmental applications. NPs generate the free radicals, which can further result in oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is the disturbance of equilibration of generation of prooxidants such as superoxide anion, reactive oxygen species (ROS), peroxynitrite, and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and antioxidants such as catalase and dismutase. In humans, there are mainly two sources of oxidative stress: endogenous sources such as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidases, cytochromes, oxidases, and peroxisomes and exogenous sources such as ionization radiation, NPs, and bacterial and fungi toxins. Exposure of NPs such as nanoparticulate zero-valence iron, silica NPs, and copper NPs generates the oxidants such as ROS, RNS, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radical, which cause the oxidative stress that can damage the DNA, proteins, and lipids in humans. Oxidative stress can be measured in vivo, ex vivo, and inside the cell by using certain techniques such as fluorescence microplate reader, flow cytometry, and confocal microscopy. NPs such as gold half-shell multifunctional NPs, poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid NPs, and solid lipid nanoparticles have been used for the delivery of drugs at the inflammatory site for the treatment of inflammatory diseases." @default.
