- W296784923 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the practical aspects of experimental work done on ices. The full range of experimental and theoretical methods for solid state research is used to study the behavior of water molecules in the various ice phases; the usual lattice properties of the solid state offer an attractive starting point for an understanding of the increasingly complex world of water and its biological functions. A special kind of doping used in studies on ice phases is isotopic dilution. A common feature of many ice phases and a source of considerable complication is the orientational disorder of the water molecules resulting in very broad spectroscopic features with consequent problems in the detailed mode assignment. The sample preparation and sample handling is also discussed in the chapter. The techniques that allow the investigation of motional and structural phenomena in the ices are (1) nuclear magnetic resonance and nuclear quadrupole double resonance (NQR), (2) electric and dielectric methods, (3) vibrational spectroscopy, or (4) crystallography." @default.
