- W2968462564 abstract "One winter’s night, in a dark street in Athens a woman’s steps are followedby other, heavier steps. She hears them but does not see, cannot see becauseof the darkness, or is afraid to see. The attack that followed did not let hersee for months to come, nor to speak of what had happened, of what shefelt, of what she wanted to be heard. The acid that blinded her eyes andburnt her throat did not kill her but made her ‘as mute as ever.’ The womanis Constantina Kuneva, a Bulgarian migrant activist living and working inAthens whose case we discuss below. As this chapter is being written, and asshe slowly regains partial vision and a broken voice, issues of women’s vulnerability in today’s global world emerge, claiming answers that cannot begiven in silence.Globalization, the last enlargement of the European Union, the increasinginstability in the developing world and growing disparities in the level ofprosperity and human security experienced by different societies in thedeveloped migrant destination countries and the developing world, havegenerated new, complex forms of population movement and have reconfigured refugee and asylum issues. These trends, presented EU Member Stateswith massive challenges, questioning established notions of identity and citizenship, in the light of emerging divergences between the interests ofmigrants and states trying to control their movement and entry as well asbetween the interests of governments, NGOs and civil societies. These trendshave also been associated with the growing vulnerability of those involved:Vulnerability can be seen as a state of high exposure to certain risks anduncertainties, in combination with a reduced ability to protect or defendoneself against those risks and uncertainties and cope with their negativeconsequences. It exists at all levels and dimensions of society and formsan integral part of the human condition, affecting both individuals andsociety as a whole." @default.
