- W2969013485 abstract "If “experience is the best teacher,” the question for training developers is “what experience teaches best?” For skill training, there is evidence that practice and feedback are important and should be a part of training (Salas et al., 1999; Thornton & Cleveland, 1990). To enhance this experience, training designers attempt to replicate the job context as faithfully as possible. Thus for training crew resource management (CRM) skills (e.g., decision making, communication, workload management), realistic scenarios combined with the full-mission-high-fidelity simulator is the preferred method. This method, referred to as line-oriented flight training (LOFT), is well accepted by crew members and instructors and is believed to provide good training (Lauber & Foushee, 1981). Unfortunately, the cost of using sophisticated flight simulators limits their availability and their use in providing a range of practice for CRM skill training. At present, the most commonly used alternative to the high-fidelity simulator for CRM practice and feedback is role play, but effective role plays are difficult to design, and they may not be well accepted by the people being trained. To address the need for more available CRM practice and feedback opportunities, research has been conducted using low-cost trainers that only partially replicate the cockpit environment. In this chapter we present the possibilities of these devices for use in CRM skill training. We give a rationale for their use, dis-cuss their capabilities and limitations, cover some of the research for CRM training with the devices, and outline training guidance. Our purposes in this chapter are to acquaint readers who are unfamiliar with low-fidelity training devices with some of the research showing their usefulness for CRM and to give guidance to thosewho are interested in integrating the systems into their training programs. Although our emphasis in this chapter is on the use of low-fidelity devices for CRM training in aviation, we have drawn some of our rationale for the use of these systems from management training; we also acknowledge a similarity between the skills defined for CRM and general teamwork skills. This similarity suggests that the concept of low-fidelity simulation may prove useful for other professional groups who must be trained in similar skills and for whom a simple job simulation would be possible." @default.
