- W296918363 abstract "Ascochyta blight of chickpea (Cicer arietinum) incited by Ascochyta rabiei was first observed in the United States in chickpea germplasm evaluation trials at Pullman, Washington, in 1983. In 1984, Ascochyta blight was found in over 50% of the commercial fields of“UC-5” chickpea in the Palouse region of eastern Washington and northern Idaho. In 1986, Didymella rabiei (syn. Mycosphaerella rabiei), the teleomorph (sexual stage) of A. rabiei, was discovered on overwintered infested chickpea debris from a field near Genesee, Idaho. The fungus, which is heterothallic, requires the presence of two compatible mating types for the teleomorph to form. Ascospores from the teleomorph are important in the long distance spread of the pathogen. In 1987, over 4,500 hectares of UC-5 and“Surutato 77” chickpea in the Palouse region were devastated by Ascochyta blight. Many kabuli and desi chickpea lines from different countries have been screened for resistance to pathotypes of the fungus that occur in the Palouse region. A chickpea breeding program is incorporating blight resistance into large-seeded kabuli cultivars. An integrated program to control Ascochyta blight is needed in areas where the disease occurs in the US Pacific Northwest if chickpea is to remain a viable crop. The program will need to include the use of blight-free seed, seed treatment fungicides, crop rotation, management of infested crop debris, and resistant cultivars." @default.
