- W2969321114 abstract "Surfing has shifted from the margins to the mainstream, with millions of people now participating at organized and recreational levels globally (Booth 2004; McGloin 2005; Surfing Australia 2012; Waitt 2008). This widespread participation includes a growing number of women who paddle out into surfbreaks. However, despite women’s participation as surfers becoming increasingly visible, the cultural representation and participation of women is often downplayed or cast in highly sexualized ways. Particularly at a competitive level, women’s achievements and skills as surfers remain largely defined in terms of existing performative and cultural understandings attached to male surfers (Ford and Brown 2006; Olive, McCuaig and Phillips 2015). The continued marginalization and sexualization of women who surf is well documented by scholars in Australia, Britain, New Zealand, the United States, and Brazil (Booth 2001; Comer 2010; Evers 2004, 2010; Henderson 1999, 2001; Heywood 2008; Knijnik, Horton and Cruz 2010; Olive 2013a, 2015; Olive et al. 2015; Roy 2013; Roy and Caudwell 2014; Stedman 1997), although research on women and surfing has tended toward a focus on the representations of women (predominantly in surf media) and how these representations mediate the positions of women who surf within wider surfing culture. This research has argued that while changes in the attitudes of women toward participation in surfing are important, until men include women in their understandings of surfing as an activity, women will continue to struggle for recognition and acceptance (Booth 2001; Ford and Brown 2006; Henderson 1999, 2001; Stedman 1997)." @default.
