- W2969689364 abstract "Reviewed by: SLAY by Brittney Morris Wesley Jacques Morris, Brittney SLAY. Simon Pulse, 2019 [336p] Trade ed. ISBN 978-1-5344-4542-0 $18.99 E-book ed. ISBN 978-1-5344-4544-4 $10.99 Reviewed from galleys R Gr. 7-10 Online, she’s is Emerald, founder and resident queen of the invite-only Black-positive MMORPG “SLAY,” but in real life she’s Kiera Johnson, an upper middle class seventeen-year-old, a tech and math whiz, and one of the only Black students at her predominately white high school in Bellevue, Washington. When a prominent player dies violently IRL, the whole world seems to want to hold Emerald accountable and label the game and its community as racist. Morris uses this savvy contemporary premise to thoughtfully consider some of the pitfalls of gaming while Black. Despite creating the game, Kiera wasn’t fully prepared for the debate about its exclusionary nature, and she grapples with her own identity in the midst of mostly white friends that turn to her to address every question they have regarding race, a fairly militant and overachieving younger sister, parents chiding both daughters for talking “ghetto,” and a boyfriend who is markedly toxic in his views of race and gender. Despite its detractors, the game itself is undeniably impressive in its mechanics [End Page 29] and celebration of Pan-African iconography from mumbo sauce to orishas, and SLAY—game and novel alike—offers a richly global perspective on the Black diaspora as kids in Kansas City, Parisian university students, and MIT professors in Boston embed themselves in the virtual world. Personal problems in Kiera’s love life entangle with SLAY and make things difficult for her but the subsequent growth is necessary, and the novel treats readers to a well-deserved celebration of contemporary Black womanhood with an extremely likable protagonist at its center.
