This work evaluates the ethanol production from different mixtures of banana waste (pseudostem, peels, and rejected fruit) through process simulations using the Aspen Hysys® software. The mixtures analyzed were pseudostem-rejected fruit, pseudostem-peel, and the mixture of the three wastes (in the proportion that they are discarded after harvesting the fruit). Results indicated the use of a proportion of 35% pseudostem and 65% rejected fruit and, a rate of 50% of each residue for the mixture of the peel with pseudostem. The best scenario studied was using a mixture of three banana wastes. In this case, the ethanol content in wine could be increased by about 18%. Besides demonstrating that using a mixture of residues is better than one alone, the simulations showed that this scenario enables thermal integration where the process energy demand could be reduced by up to 68.7%, with a payback of only 1.7 years.
