- W2969849820 abstract "Currently, the global human population has surpassed 7.7 billion and there is a consistent rise in this number. This rise in population means an increase in food needs and nutrition requirements of the humans. Contrarily, the food production factors (particularly land and water) are not only limited, but their sustainability is also at stake. In this wake, conventional agricultural systems should be supported with some amendments that could help in conserving the natural resources and may provide environment-friendly pest management. Mulching the soil with materials such as straw or plastic covering (black plastic has been the most common) has been found to conserve water and soil, add organic matter and nutrients to the soil (straw, compost, or wood remains), regulate the soil temperature, enhance biological activities in the soil, positively modify the field microclimate, and negatively impact the weeds, disease pathogens, and insect pests. Black plastic and straw have been the most utilized mulch types globally. Advantages of black plastic mulch surpass the straw mulch, but straw has a lower cost, easy availability, and no residue. Black plastic mulch is likely to provide higher weed control, water conservation, and other benefits but has a higher cost and leaves residues in the soil. Biodegradable mulches (made from starch or some other degradable polymers) are an excellent alternative to the plastic mulch. Water scarcity, degradation of natural soil resources, and desire for the non-chemical pest control may necessitate the soil covering (mulching) as a compulsory ritual in the future agriculture. Soil mulching is expected to play an inevitable role in the soil and water conservation in the near future." @default.
