- W2970097107 abstract "Histories of the Anglo-Jewish community havetypically been written in terms of its ‘conforming majority’but this is problematic on two grounds. Firstly, it excludes thosedeemed socially, religiously and politically nonconforming andomitted from communal records either deliberately or by default.Secondly, it presents a narrow view of the community, defined byits elites and captured in their sources. This thesis seeks torestore nonconforming individuals to the communal narrative andthus provide a more nuanced understanding of the Jewish communityand the struggles of its members as they arrived in Manchester andadapted to their new environment, sometimes manifest in their dualidentities as Jews and as Mancunians. The Manchester Jewish Museumoral testimony collection provides an ideal source for suchrestoration and through availability of sources determines theperiod of study to be between 1880 and 1945. Rather than accept aunited community defined by consensus, this thesis illuminates theplurality of Jewish identities and experiences and the numeroussub-communities that existed in Manchester. These sub-communitieswere united in their identification as Jews, which was bothself-selected and imposed on them from outside of the community butthey differed and sometimes clashed in their understanding ofsocial norms and values. The four chapters that make up the mainbody of this thesis focus on crime, political radicalism,marriage/intermarriage and disability and illness and consider howthese challenged notional social norms of the elites, whichrepresent communal leadership, wider communities and localities, and individual families. The varied and conflicting responses tothese types of nonconformity further complicate the idea ofconsensus, not just within the wider Jewish community but alsowithin the individual sub-communities which typically displayedgreater inner cohesion. The result of this study is not onlygreater understanding of the Jewish community, outside ofpreconceived patterns but also more fluid and nuanced model ofnonconformity in the community. Nonconformists, though they mighthave, by the virtue of their intermarriage, disability or politicalradicalism fallen into the same category, were neverthelessmotivated by different factors and this affected both theirunderstanding and interpretation of the community and their placewithin it and also their communities’ response tothem." @default.
