- W2970294859 abstract "This thesis examines the materiality and practiceof West African indigenous/‘traditional’ medicine through anarchaeological ethnographic study engaging with contemporaryhealing specialists in a migrant community of Accra, Ghana. Itmakes an original contribution to knowledge through documentationand analysis of the workspaces, objects, substances, andperformances of these indigenous and Islamic medico-religiouspractitioners. Such material culture is often overlooked in theethnographic record, because of historic biases within anthropologywhich undervalue the substance of healing, in favour of esotericand social analysis. Consequently, this has restrictedarchaeology’s access to healing in the past, as sources offeringdetailed, contextualised accounts of medicinal activity insub-Saharan Africa are limited. The research here was conducted inresponse to this problem. Two fieldwork seasons (2010 and 2011)were spent completing structured and semi-structured interviews, conducting participant observation, collecting medicinal substancesand objects, and in audio-visual recording of healing practices. The study situated itself within the theoretical frameworks ofarchaeological ethnography, an emerging field centred uponquestions of materiality and temporality. This approachacknowledges participants as partners, rather than subjects, inresearch, and calls for a valorising of local voices, or ‘alternatearchaeologies’. Thanks in part to this open research strategy, theproject expanded to include over 30 specialist informants, fromvarious types of healers, to their young apprentices, medicinestall holders, gatherers of plants and animals, and secretiveshrine keepers. A sample of 141 herbal remedies and over fiftyspiritual therapies were fully documented, as were the compounds, tools, life stories, and healing beliefs of the medical culture’skey actors. Each thesis chapter offers new understandings of thesevaried aspects of the indigenous West African healers’ role:exploring the way therapeutic practices shape, and are shaped by,their lived spaces; the artefact assemblages structuring andsupporting these practices; and the substances and medicinesthrough which they communicate well-being to others. From anarchaeological standpoint, such contemporary findings presentbroader interpretive perspectives which widen both potentialinsights and sources of evidence on healing in the past. Overall, the argument is developed that engagement with contemporary healerscentred upon material culture is productive, and that outcomes fromthis have significant archaeological implications. The author’srecommendation is that research into evidence of past medicalcultures and medico-religious artefacts would benefit from activelyincluding contemporary indigenous specialists in interpretivedialogues, with, of course, due regard forcontext.%%%%A lack of detailed scholarly attention to thematerial dimension of African medicine and healing has recentlybeen acknowledged as a factor limiting understandings of…" @default.
