- W297029808 abstract "Publisher Summary Evidence has been obtained in laboratory that testosterone metabolism is sex dependent. Male differentiation is accompanied by an increase of enzymatic activity allowing the hydrogenation of testosterone in the 5α position. From experiments, using the administration of radioactive testosterone by various routes, it appeared that this metabolic step occurs in target tissues, particularly in the skin. The in vivo data corroborate in vitro results indicating that human prostate and skin are capable of converting testosterone to 17β-hydroxy-5α-androstan-3-one. The fact that dihydrotestosterone is specifically bound in rat prostate to a nuclear protein suggests that, at least in this tissue and in this mammalian species, dihydrotestosterone might be the active androgen. This chapter presents data that favours the hypothesis by which the rate of testosterone 5α-reduction in target cells depends upon the amount of plasma free testosterone available for metabolism." @default.
