These are developed and produced through a series of unit chemical operations, with critical operational limits for process parameters and differing reactant combinations including aluminum metal powders. Explosive processing unit accident histories prove the potential explosive characteristics of micron-sized aluminum metal powder. Some of the raw materials and the product involved in such a process have inherent explosive potential. Hence in most of the operations, involving these materials requires to be carried out with utmost safety compliance for personnel, plant and environment. Many catastrophic failures reported from the propellant processing plants were attributed to the potential explosive characteristic of aluminum metal powders and their complex interactions with the processed raw materials and equipment. This study is intended to assess the risk values associated with the propellant mixing unit using a bow tie method. The mixer unit is susceptible to failures arising from abnormal conditions resulting from process deviations. The catastrophic failures leading to a mass explosion in the mixing units are considered as the critical event for developing a bow tie. The credible top event scenarios were selected following a detailed preliminary hazard analysis using HAZOP and fire and explosion indices calculation of the propellant processing plant. This work intended to identify the failure probabilities and outcome frequencies of identified cases. The failure probabilities of the components and respective outcome frequencies are calculated by deterministic methods, and the failure probabilities of safety barriers are used for a probabilistic prediction of the outcome case in bow tie model." @default.
