- W2971179271 abstract "This thesis explores the intersectional identitiesof British South Asian (BSA) Muslim women, examining their everydaylives across different spaces of home, work and public spaces. Itdraws on interviews, photos, diary extracts and walk-alonginterviews with 28 women, aged between 25-40 years, living andworking in Oldham. The thesis examines how dominant discourses onMuslim women – which present them as extreme, and a threat, yet asalso a silent, oppressed minority – affect their interactionswith family, co-workers and community members in everydaysituations. The thesis utilises intersectional thinking (Crenshaw,1989) when looking at the lives of BSA Muslim women. In particular,it explores how applying an intersectional lens, which takes intoconsideration gender, ethnicity, social class age, as well asreligion, can provide rich, nuanced and holistic accounts ofeveryday encounters and interactions across spaces of home, workand public spaces. Importantly, this approach provides a powerfultool with which to challenge stereotypical, normative and narrowunderstandings of BSA Muslim women. The thesis unsettlesassumptions about home, work and public space through emphasis onthe different aspects of Muslim BSA women’s everyday livesincluding employment, motherhood and family ties. The thesisfurther explores how discursive discourses shape understandings ofBSA Muslim women, as well as how these influence affect BSA Muslimwomen’s interactions and experiences as the minority ‘Other’.The thesis begins by considering the home as a social field(Bourdieu, 1998) the family as a ‘realized category’. Throughan intersectional lens which considers gender, ethnicity, religionand culture the thesis challenges perceptions of the home as aprivate ‘sealed space’. Instead, analysing the socio-culturalof home, as a site of nested influences situated within aparticular community and locality illustrates the porousness of thehome for BSA Muslim women. Furthermore, through the use ofGoffman’s (1959) concept of the ‘performative self’ the homeis further troubled, as a space where women must continuouslyperform in accordance to expected social norms. In this chapter theexperiences of working from home or establishing home basedbusinesses further complicates the dichotomy of public/work andprivate/home spaces, and seeks to understand the motivations behindsuch entrepreneurship as well as the effect on family and spatialpractices in the home. The second chapter explores the space ofwork and analyses the difficulties faced by BSA Muslim in workenvironments. Analysing institutional practices through anintersectional lens highlights the way stratification of gender, race and religion are already in place in organisations. Thechapter also challenges stereotypical discourses of economicinactivity of BSA Muslim women through the need to considerlocality, life stages and discrimination as barriers to employment. The chapter further explores what happens when a visible religiousidentity…" @default.
