- W2971297744 abstract "Terrestrial locomotion is accomplished by patterned muscular activity driven by signals from the brain and from spinal pattern generators, as well by sensory feedback that promotes stability and provides an appropriate interface, or impedance that is presented to the mechanical environment. Major sources of feedback are muscle receptors that code for length, velocity and force of the muscles that contain them. This feedback regulates the mechanical properties of the parent muscle but also projects to other muscles. The neural pathways arising from this intermuscular feedback form a neural network in the spinal cord that represents the anatomy and biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system. Earlier models of spinal circuitry were modular, based on the control of single joints and a simplified conception of musculoskeletal anatomy. More recent studies have shown that intermuscular feedback projects to muscles crossing other joints and axes of rotation, thereby reflecting the mechanical interrelationships between muscles across the limb. It is proposed that this distributed feedback regulates global mechanical properties of the limb, including the inertial coupling between limb segments that can disrupt interjoint coordination." @default.
