- W2971411891 abstract "We focus on cotton cultivation in Brazil and Argentina, the countries with great cotton production in South America, where cotton varieties developed by public sector played an important role to deal with diseases and promote yield. Recently transgenes introduced by international companies were adopted for insect management and weed control (herbicide resistant genotypes). Boll weevil is the main insect pest in cotton grown in South America. Soil conservation was improved with extensive adoption of no till and minimal tillage practices, while a broader adoption of crop rotation, integrated pest management and beneficial microorganisms may favor sustainability. Crop row spacing has been reduced, especially in Argentina, which resulted in yield gains. Development of harvesters suitable to small producers also helped to increase yield gains. Land-holdings are predominantly small in South American countries except in Brazil, where double cropping has been recently adopted. Landraces and wild tetraploids are relevant genetic resources." @default.
