• W2971575474 abstract "Mainstream nightlife has traditionally been a space marked by compulsory (hetero) sexuality and heteronormativity, making it a key arena for exploring gendered power relations and sexual harassment. In this paper, women’s experiences of unwanted attention in nightlife are explored to shed light on these gendered power relations in contemporary nightlife. The article is based on 50 in-depth qualitative interviews with Norwegian women aged 18–34 years. Three discourses of gender relations in nightlife are identified: a vulnerability discourse, constructing nightlife as a dangerous space for women; an equality discourse, emphasizing women’s equal rights in nightlife; and a feminine power discourse, presenting women’s role as objects of sexual desire as a source of gendered power for women. This article points to both changes and continuities in the norms governing women’s participation in nightlife and the patterns of heterosexual interactions in Norwegian nightlife. These changes seem to be closely connected to the performances of different and new femininities in nightlife settings. Despite the prevalence of an ‘egalitarian’ femininity in nightlife, the article argues that this comes with its own restraints on women participating in nightlife." @default.
