- W2971992505 abstract "The male breadwinner model of social security constructs women as housewives, dependent on male breadwinners for financial support. As a result, many married women have been excluded from entitlement to benefits. However, some married women in the early to late twentieth century were entitled to benefits based on their paid work. These women met the basic requirement of attachment to the labour market by paying national insurance contributions. When married women claimed incapacity benefits, decision makers struggled with understanding their gendered role as unpaid workers in the domestic sphere. An obsession with women’s unpaid housework continued through the twentieth century, peaking with the discriminatory Housewives Non-Contributory Invalidity Pension in the 1970s. This chapter traces history of this obsession with housework, concluding that the debate about women’s unpaid work was not about incapacity but about attachment to the labour market." @default.
