Harmful algal blooms (HAB) in highly eutrophied coastal areas might be much more of a concern than microbial pollution and can cause a loss in the prestige of recreational areas. The focus of this study was the perception of bathing water and beach quality along the southeastern Baltic Sea coast by people visiting the beach. The study revealed that algae in water, organic and inorganic litter in the sand, water transparency were the main concerns of visitors. The beachgoers' evaluation of water and beach quality was in line with the recorded water conditions. In the coast area, affected by the plume of the Curonian Lagoon, i.e. the area of the Baltic Sea coastal waters affected by the out flowing highly productive water masses of the lagoon, beachgoers perceived HAB equally important to microbial pollution. The use of microbial pollution and HAB's criteria for bathing quality assessment significantly decreased the number of bathing waters perceived as excellent: only 34% of bathing waters fitted into the excellent category, while the lagoon waters with algal blooms or parts of the Baltic Sea coast effected by plume fits only into good or insufficient categories. Early warning systems based on remote sensing of cyanobacterial blooms could serve as a tool for managers in municipalities and could allow to undertake necessary measures to manage the risks posed by HAB." @default.
