- W2972130477 abstract "High corrosion and wear resistance properties of amorphous metals have made it an attractive proposition for applying it as coating on steel surface. Fe based metallic glass coatings have excellent corrosion resistance along with physical, mechanical and chemical properties. In the present work, authors’ endeavour was to study the corrosion resistance property of amorphous as well as composite structured iron based metallic glass coatings of different thicknesses on mild steel. Two different iron based alloys were synthesized containing a combination of metalloids and metallic elements other than iron. Initially metallic ribbons, produced through rapid solidification from these alloys were ground under controlled conditions to produce powders which were used to synthesize coatings on steel through thermal spray. Potentiodynamic polarization tests revealed 2-17 times superior corrosion resistance of the ribbons than stainless steel. Both the metallic glass coated substrates showed 1.2-1.4 times superior corrosion resistance than bare mild steel but inferior corrosion resistance than stainless steel. Composite coating obtained from alloy composition-2 showed better corrosion resistance than the complete amorphous coating obtained from alloy composition-1. The degradation in corrosion resistance property during coating synthesis from the ribbon indicates the scope for further research to optimize the thermal spraying process parameters." @default.
