- W2972755681 abstract "Twitter is an increasingly popular social media platform to communicate about radiation therapy and cancer, and it may be an important tool to highlight novel discoveries related to our field. The purpose of this analysis is to evaluate physician and patient Twitter activity related to radiation therapy in order to better understand this new communication landscape. A total of 127,360 tweets under the topic of radiation oncology from January 2015 to December 2018 were analyzed. Twitter activity patterns by demographic users (e.g., physician, patient), trending hashtags, topics of discussion related to radiation oncology, and tweet sentiment were obtained using the web-based healthcare social media analytics platform, Symplur Signals. Tweets were examined quarterly (Q) over time. Pearson correlation (r) with two-tailed significance tests was performed to identify the relation between Twitter activities over time. From January 2015 to December 2018, the number of tweets relating to radiation oncology significantly increased, from 3,308 to 11,624 (r=0.73; p=0.001). This correlated with an increase in the number of users from 1,600 in Q1 2015 to 6,700 in Q4 2018 (r=0.72; p=0.002). The number of physician tweets increased over this time period from 152 tweets in Q1 2015 to 1,641 tweets in Q4 2018 (r=0.955; p<0.001). The contribution of tweets by patients also increased significantly, from a total of 15 tweets in Q1 2015 to 389 tweets in Q4 2018 (r=0.51; p=0.043). Patient retweets also significantly rose over this time period from 17 in Q1 2015 to 57 in Q4 2018 (r=0.551; p=0.027). Since 2015, a total of 110,062 articles pertaining to radiation oncology were shared via Twitter. The number of articles shared increased from 2,908 in Q1 2015 to 9,363 in Q4 2018 (r=0.661; p=0.005). Overall tweet sentiment related to radiation oncology was consistently positive (r=-0.72; p=0.278), with an average of 83% of all tweets viewing the field favorably. Radiation oncology related Twitter activity has grown substantially over the years, with a majority of the discussion involving physicians. The increase in physician activity appeared to correlate with an increase in patient activity. Twitter may be an important platform in which radiation oncologists can highlight novel research findings, promote clinical trials, and better communicate with the media and our patients. Twitter may be an important tool to help elevate the profile of the field." @default.
