- W2973283341 abstract "Abstract Emerging gastroenteric viruses are usually present in wastewater and represent the main cause of waterborne and foodborne diseases. Gastroenteric viruses, such as rotavirus (RV) A (RVA), human astroviruses (HAstVs), and enteric adenoviruses, are considered the most common pathogens associated with human viral gastroenteritis in the world. Viral gastroenteritis is the second cause of morbidity and mortality after respiratory infections. RVA is considered the first etiological agent of acute viral gastroenteritis in children. Similarly, RVA is considered emerging viruses associated with viral epidemics gastroenteritis. In addition, the genetic reassortment phenomenon between the viral strains of human and animal origin and the type of the nucleic acid genome (RNA) of these viruses are responsible for the emergence of new genotype in the pediatric population and in the aquatic environment every 2 years. Furthermore, and based on the high genetic diversity of HAstVs and human adenoviruses (HAdVs), these viruses are also recognized as emerging gastroenteric viruses. Moreover, the HAdVs are considered the best markers of human fecal contamination in wastewater. Therefore the detection of these viruses in the environment, particularly, in wastewater, and the identification of their genotype seemed to be a new strategy to monitor the emergence of gastroenteric viruses strains in regions where monitoring of viral gastroenteritis is lacking. This chapter will focus on the description of the virological characteristics of some gastroenteric viruses, such as RVA, HAstVs, and HAdVs. An overview will cover the structure and genetic diversity of these viruses, their virion properties, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and epidemiology. Finally, the detection rates and the molecular epidemiology of the RVs, HAstVs, and HAdVs in wastewater treatment plants related with waterborne outbreaks in different regions of the world will be discussed. Subsequently, the sewage systematic surveillance is useful for the waterborne outbreaks prevention." @default.
