We review the theory of geomagnetic induction and how electromagnetic (EM) signals measured on the surface are used to create magnetotelluric (MT) impedance tensor data, which describe how the relationship between the electric and magnetic fields measured on the Earth's surface depends on the Earth's internal electrical conductivity. MT data are usually used to create subsurface resistivity models from which geologic interpretations are made, but they can also be used to predict ground electric fields induced by disturbances to the geomagnetic field, such as those produced by a solar coronal mass ejection. This chapter describes the complete MT workflow with attention to GICs, including the basic theory and physics of MT, instrumentation, data acquisition, data processing, inversion, and geologic interpretation of resistivity models." @default.
