- W2973835 abstract "Most of the research on metabolism of tundra plant species at low temperatures concerns whole-leaf or whole-plant gas exchange. Optimum and compensation point temperatures for net photosynthesis occur at lower temperatures and absolute metabolic rates below 10°C are usually higher for tundra species and ecotypes than for species or ecotypes from warmer habitats. Metabolic acclimation in response to seasonal changes in temperature is an important adjunct to the evolutionary shift in metabolic function. Limited work on cellular mechanisms of temperature adaptation for tundra and non-tundra species is reviewed. Improved metabolic performance at low temperatures appears to be primarily a function of resistance of chloroplast and mitochondrial membranes to low temperature phase changes and quantitative increases in enzyme levels. Changes in stomatal conductance and enzyme kinetic properties occur in some species, but are of secondary importance. Based upon existing fragmentary evidence, there appear to be no qualitative differences between tundra and non-tundra species in their adaptations for low temperature metabolism." @default.
