As Lois Jean White, the President of the National Parent/Teacher Association, explains in her forward to this book, Child by Child: The Comer Process for Change in Education serves as a discourse on the value of determination and persistence. It champions hope over despair and over adversity. It is an important book because it addresses one of our most basic needs: preparing our children for lifelong success (p. xv). Four editors and 97 authors have shared their ideas, research, and experiences for the creation of this single volume that policymakers, administrators, educators, parents, communities, and even students can utilize as a valued resource for improving schools. The Comer Process, which is exemplified throughout the book, is based on school reformation where James P. Comer illustrates six goals to achieve in order to successfully reform schools. To reform schools, we must (a) understand the complex dynamics that affect them; (b) start where the children are; (c) keep pace with our changing society; (d) focus on relationships and child development; (e) develop group goals, trust, and accountability to standards; and (f) make financial commitments and policy changes. Divided into three sections, Child by Child gives detailed examples of the implementation of and how the Comer Process has changed schools across the United States and abroad. Part I: Improving Children's Lives (chapters 1-9) abounds in the experiences of students, teachers, administrators and researchers who have attained fruitful ends by using the Comer Process. Each chapter illustrates the steps involved in the Comer Process and the testimonies of those involved: 1. How the adults involved in schools can become truly accountable for fulfilling responsibilities to all students. 2. Why school communities need in-depth knowledge about students' lives outside the classroom. 3.
