- W2977759783 abstract "Introduction: The US Preventive Services Task Force recommend that individuals born between 1945 and 1965 should be screened for hepatitis C infection. We assessed the impact of socio-demographic factors on the screening for hepatitis C using a nationally representative sample. Methods: The study was conducted using the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS 2013-2014). Individuals born between 1945 to 1965 who responded to the question “Have you ever had a blood test for hepatitis C” were included in the study. Analysis was performed to ascertain the effects of gender, race, income, education level and health insurance status on the likelihood that participants have had a blood test for hepatitis C. Results: The logistic regression model was statistically significant, χ2(6) = 700.857, p< 0.0005. After accounting for each variable, males (OR = 1.28, CI 1.18 - 1.39, p = 0.000) and living below poverty line (OR = 1.25, CI 1.11 - 1.40, p = 0.000) were more likely to report having had a blood test for hepatitis C. No health insurance (OR = 0.76, CI 0.67 - 0.86, p = 0.000) and no high school (OR = 0.40, CI 0.31 - 0.52, p = 0.000) were less likely to report being screened for hepatitis C. There was no statistical difference between racial groups (OR = 1.05, CI 0.94 - 1.17, p = 0.404), and though a Chi-square analysis showed whites were more likely to be screened than blacks (14.1% vs 13.9%), the difference was also not statistically significant, (X2(1) = 0.102, p = 0.75). Individuals with chronic liver disease were 11.5 times more likely to have been screened for hepatitis C. Conclusion: Socio-demographic factors impact the screening rate for hepatitis C among individuals born between 1945 and 1965. With recent emphasis on screening this age group for hepatitis C, there is need to address these inequities so as to achieve the goal of optimal identification and treatment of hepatitis C infection in this cohort." @default.
